What is Dry Eye Syndrome?

Dry eye syndrome, also known as dry eye disease, occurs when your eyes do not produce enough tears or when the tears evaporate too quickly. This imbalance in the tear system prevents your eyes from being adequately lubricated and moistened, leading to discomfort and potentially impacting vision. Tears are essential for maintaining eye health, providing clear vision, and protecting the surface of the eye from environmental irritants.

Causes of Dry Eye Syndrome

  • Decreased Tear Production: Age, certain medical conditions (like diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and thyroid disorders), specific medications (including antihistamines, decongestants, and some blood pressure drugs), and laser eye surgery can reduce tear production.
  • Increased Tear Evaporation: Environmental conditions (such as dry air, wind, and smoke), prolonged screen use (leading to reduced blinking), wearing contact lenses for extended periods, and imbalances in the composition of your tears can increase tear evaporation. Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), where the glands in the eyelids that produce the oil layer of tears become blocked, is a common cause of increased evaporation.
  • Imbalance in Tear Composition: Tears are made up of water, oil, and mucus. Problems with any of these components can affect tear quality and lead to dry eyes. For example, if the oil layer is insufficient due to MGD, tears will evaporate too quickly.

Treatment is relaxing and completely contact-free, making it an excellent option for sensitive patients.
