LipiFlow®: What Is It?

LipiFlow® is an FDA-cleared, clinically proven treatment for Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)—the leading cause of dry eye disease. It’s the result of over a decade of research and innovation in ocular surface science, developed to target the root cause of evaporative dry eye.

For years, the standard at-home care for MGD relied on warm compresses, lid massages, and artificial tears—helpful for some, but inconsistent and often unable to penetrate the hardened oil blockages deep within the glands.

That’s where LipiFlow® changed the game.

Developed by TearScience®, the LipiFlow® Thermal Pulsation System was introduced as the first in-office device to safely and effectively:

  • Apply controlled heat directly to the inner eyelids (where the glands live).
  • Combine that heat with gentle pulsed pressure to clear gland obstructions.
  • Restore oil flow, improving the stability and health of the tear film.

Since receiving FDA clearance in 2011, LipiFlow® has become a gold standard treatment for MGD.

Understanding How LipiFlow® Works

During your LipiFlow® treatment:

  1. You’ll relax while we place small, sterile applicators over your eyelids.
  2. The device gently warms the inner eyelids while applying light pressure to the outer lids.
  3. This combination melts and expresses the gland blockages, without any discomfort.
  4. After the treatment, your glands can begin producing healthy oils again, stabilizing your tears

Most patients start noticing relief within 2 to 4 weeks, with continued improvement as the tear film rebalances.

Why Choose LipiFlow® for Dry Eye?

Many dry eye treatments only manage symptoms. LipiFlow® treats the root cause. Here’s why patients love it:

  • Clinically proven results for MGD and evaporative dry eye
  • No pain, no needles, no downtime
  • Safe, sterile, in-office procedure
  • Long-lasting relief after a single session
  • Less dependence on artificial tears or warm compresses

If you’re tired of short-term solutions, LipiFlow® could be your answer.

How Do I Know Which Dry Eye Treatment Is Right for Me?

Dry eye isn’t one-size-fits-all, and neither is treatment. The best way to determine what will actually work for your eyes is to start with a comprehensive dry eye evaluation.

At Dr Elmalem and Associates, we take time to understand:

  • What type of dry eye do you have (evaporative vs. aqueous-deficient)
  • Whether your meibomian glands are functioning properly
  • If inflammation, eyelid conditions, or lifestyle factors are contributing
  • What treatments you already tried—and what’s been effective (or not)

Based on your diagnostic results, we’ll recommend a customized treatment plan.
