What is Arunalight?
Arunalight is a medical-grade photobiomodulation (PBM) device designed to treat Dry Macular Degeneration and Chronic Dry Eye. By using specific 670nm red light wavelengths, it stimulates ocular cells to produce internal energy, improve blood flow, and stabilize vision in just 3 minutes, 3 times a week.
The "Modern Light Deficit": Why Our Eyes Are Starved for Red Light
For most of human history, our eyes were bathed in natural infrared and red light from the sun. Evolutionarily, our ocular cells developed a "thirst" for these wavelengths to repair daily damage. However, our modern world has created a biological gap.
Today, our environments are dominated by LED bulbs and digital screens. While efficient, these light sources are "blue-heavy" and almost entirely lack the restorative red spectrum. At Dr. Elmalem & Associates, we view Arunalight as a way to restore what modern technology has taken away. As Dr. Joseph Elmalem explains:
"We've all gone to LED bulbs... so we've lost the red light that was around all the time in our lives, which was an important component. Now we're replacing it."
By reintroducing this specific light frequency, we aren't just treating a symptom; we are providing the "nutrients" the eye needs to maintain its own health.
What is Photobiomodulation (PBM)? The Cellular Power Plant
While it sounds complex, Photobiomodulation is simply the use of light to trigger a biological change. To understand how Arunalight works, we have to look at the mitochondria—the power plants of your cells.
Your retina is one of the most energy-demanding tissues in the entire body. It requires a constant flow of energy to process images and send them to the brain. Over time, or due to conditions like AMD, these cellular power plants slow down. When your ocular cells absorb the medical-grade light from Arunalight, they begin to manufacture ATP (adenosine triphosphate).
"It stimulates the cells to manufacture their own internal energy source... it optimizes cell function, improves blood flow, and helps get rid of harmful substances," says Dr. Elmalem.
Think of it as a wireless charger for your eyes. When the cells have more energy, they can perform "housekeeping" tasks—like clearing out waste and repairing microscopic damage—more effectively.
A Breakthrough for Dry Macular Degeneration (AMD)
For a long time, a diagnosis of Dry AMD felt like a "wait and see" sentence. Patients were told to take eye vitamins and hope for the best. Arunalight represents a paradigm shift from passive observation to active intervention.
1. Stabilization is the Primary Goal
In clinical eye care, stabilization is a major victory. By providing the retina with the energy it needs to function, we aim to slow the progression of the disease.
"In most cases we're just looking to stabilize. We don't want the situation to progress," explains Dr. Elmalem. "We want to minimize further the deposition of drusen and further loss of cellular function."
2. Addressing Drusen Deposition
Drusen are small yellow deposits of fatty proteins that accumulate under the retina. They are a hallmark of AMD. PBM therapy helps the eye's natural waste-disposal system (the RPE layer) stay energized enough to clear these deposits. In some clinical cases, we even see a reduction in the size and number of drusen.
3. Safety and Contraindications
It is critical to distinguish between the two types of AMD. Arunalight is specifically for Dry AMD.
"It's only for dry macular degeneration," clarifies Dr. Elmalem. "Because it enhances blood flow, it can be a potential risk for those with wet macular degeneration."
Beyond Warm Compresses: A New Approach to Dry Eye
If you’ve struggled with Chronic Dry Eye, you likely know the routine of warm compresses. While helpful, they only address the result of the problem (clogged oils). Arunalight addresses the cellular environment of the glands.
Why "Internal Heat" Wins
Standard compresses apply heat to the skin of the eyelids, hoping it penetrates deep enough to melt the oils in the Meibomian glands. Arunalight, however, uses PBM to create internal heat.
"The main difference is that it forces the cells to manufacture their own energy source and that creates internal heat. So you're actually heating from within, whereas a hot compress is external heat. Completely different mechanism. Completely different result."
By stimulating blood flow and cellular activity from the inside out, Arunalight helps the glands function more naturally, providing longer-lasting relief than a 10-minute mask.
The Arunalight Protocol: 3 Minutes to Better Vision
One of the reasons we recommend Arunalight at our Richmond Hill and Newmarket clinics is its high patient compliance. Unlike treatments that require hours of clinical visits, this is an "adjunct" therapy—a partner to your existing care that you can use at home.
- The Routine: Every other day (3 times a week), ideally in the morning upon waking.
- The Experience: You simply sit comfortably, close your eyes, and put the glasses on. The light penetrates the eyelids, so there is no discomfort.
- Automation: The device shuts off automatically after 3 minutes. It is portable and rechargeable, making it easy to use while traveling or sitting in your favorite chair.
Why "Medical-Grade" Matters: Avoiding the Copycat Trap
The rise of red light therapy has led to a flood of cheap, "retail" red light masks on social media. However, treating the eyes requires a level of precision that a generic skincare mask cannot provide.
Arunalight was developed by a specialized board of optometrists, ophthalmologists, and light scientists. This is vital because the eye is sensitive to specific "windows" of light.
"Oftentimes there are copycat products where the wavelength they use... is incorrect," warns Dr. Elmalem. "People are not benefiting the way they should. They might be saving a couple of dollars, but they’re not getting the truth."
Using the wrong wavelength or the wrong "irradiance" (power density) can be ineffective or, worse, damaging. Arunalight’s 670nm wavelength is backed by specific clinical literature as the most effective "sweet spot" for ocular tissue.
Why We Chose Arunalight for Our Patients
At Dr. Elmalem & Associates, we pride ourselves on being pioneers. We don't bring technology into our Richmond Hill and Newmarket offices unless it meets two criteria: Is it safe? and Is it backed by science?
"The science is there," says Dr. Elmalem. "There's enough scientific literature to show that this is a safe and effective technology. And plus we don't have anything else to offer for macular degeneration. This is very easy to use. It’s non-invasive... you can have medical-grade red light therapy in the comfort of your own home."
Are You a Candidate for PBM?
If you have been diagnosed with Dry AMD or struggle with persistent Dry Eye symptoms that haven't responded to traditional drops and masks, it's time to look at the cellular level.
